Coral – Shell Licensee, operates a rigorous quality and quantity control system to ensure that customers receive the right quality and right amount of fuel wherever they fill up.
ISO 9001:2008 Certification
The Shell fuel quality assurance system has been certified with ISO 9001:2008 rating by the independent external body Bureau Veritas Certification.
The rigorous control system includes:
- Input-output system at our facilities and gas stations which measure the fuel quality when it is delivered (input) and when it is pumped (output).
- Analysis carried out by fuel scientists in our laboratories
- Electronic sealing of tankers and GPS monitoring
- Regular checks made by specially equipped mobile units
- Innovative Shell DNA fuel certification technology which adds a marker into Shell fuel ensuring its authenticiy
Fuel Quality Control
Shell implements a rigorous fuel quality control system at all its gas stations, performing random daily checks to ensure customers are getting the best quality fuel. We also introduced a special molecular marker, known as Shell DNA, to identify authentic Shell fuels.
Our mobile units cover over 100,000 km and conduct over 2,000 station checks annually. This is what we do to ensure the highest fuel quality:
- Check for the presence of moisture in the tanks and fuel pumps at Shell stations
- Inspect tanks and fuel pumps for impurities or other foreign substances/contaminants
- Ensure there is no mixing of different types of gasoline (e.g., presence of 95-octane unleaded in a tank containing 100-octane unleaded) and diesel in the tanks at our stations
- Conduct sampling and complete analysis in our laboratories (if additional checks are required)
Unique Molecular Marker Technology
In the context of the constant search and passion for development and substantial improvement of its fuels, we introduced a unique molecular tracer technology for quality control in our fuels.
All Shell V-Power fuels now incorporate the new molecular marker technology, which allows for the verification of the product's identity and its unique characteristics.
The molecular tracer is introduced into our fuels in infinitesimal quantities (milligrams per cubic meter, PPB), it can only be detected with specialized instruments, it cannot be removed or distorted, thus allowing for the identification of our fuels with exceptional accuracy.
Fuel Quantity Control
Alongside quality control, Coral – Shell Licensee intensively monitors and checks the pumps and fuel stocks at its stations to ensure that you, the customer, always receive the correct amount of fuel. The Mobile Units for Quality & Quantity Control conduct random checks at the stations to ensure that the pumps dispense the correct amount of fuel. How we do this:
- Conducting quantitative checks using accredited volumetric containers (litrometers) on the fuel pumps
- Confirming that the fuel pumps are properly sealed (in accordance with current legislation by accredited pump calibration/sealing teams)
- Ensuring that the station's measuring instruments (litrometers) are suitable for use.
With the input-output system, all pump transactions are continuously monitored and compared with the fuel tank stock. If the amount differs more than the legal limit, an alarm is triggered and the authorities are notified.
